Typical Wiring Information
|
Telephone Lines |
The wiring of the telephone intercom system
is an extremely important and integral part of the overall telephone entry
system. Use proper wire for the telephone lines, power wires, and be sure
that the system is properly grounded.
Do not run high voltage (115V) power lines
and telephone lines in the same conduit. These should be in separate conduits
separated by at least six (6) inches. Be sure that all telephone lines
are twisted. Telephone lines must be completely isolated from ground.
It is highly recommended that telephone lines surge suppressers be installed
on both the phone in and phone out lines to protect the system from power
surges.
- Use 24-gauge wire
for distances up to 800 feet.
- Use 22-gauge
wire for distances up to 1600 feet.
- Use 20-gauge
wire for distances up to 2200 feet.
- Use 18-gauge
wire for distances up to 3600 feet.
Install
a minimum of 4 wires.

Powering The System |
The Entry system is supplied with a 16 VAC,
20 va. transformer. It is important that the system is powered using the
supplied transformer. To properly power the system:
- Connect 16 VAC power from the 16 VAC,
20 va. transformer to the 16AC terminals on the terminal strip.
Model 1860 circuit board uses terminal 13 and
14.
Model 1865 circuit board uses terminal 19 and 20.
- Do not power any other device from this
transformer.
- Completely isolate this wiring from the
ground! Using the following chart to determine the proper wiring size
and distance to power the entry system: Do not use thinly insulated
intercom or communication wire. Use 600 volt heavily insulated building
typw wire.

Single System |
Install the 1812 bypass switch in a location
that is easily accessible by the homeowner. Do not install the bypass
switch outdoors unless it is enclosed in a rain tight NEMA type enclosure.
Be sure to properly ground the by-pass switch.

|
- Be sure that the wire connections to
the telephone company demarcation (interface) device are made on a house
side, and not the phone company side of the device. I
- f any alarm systems are installed on
the phone line, be sure that the alarm interface precedes the 1812 by-pass
switch interface.
- Check for polarity on the phone "IN"
wire, terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 2 must be positive with respect to
terminal 1. Set a VOM meter to measure DC volts. Place the positive
lead on terminal 2 and the negative lead on terminal 1. If the meter
shows a positive voltage - OK. If the meter shows a negative voltage
(needle moves off scale to the left), reverse the wires on terminals
1 and 2.
- Surge protection
is recommended on both the phone in and phone out lines.
- Use only twisted pair telephone wire
that has proper insulation for direct underground burial. Do not use
thinly insulated phone wire, even if the phone lines will be run in
a conduit. Do not make any splices to the phone in or phone out lines.
If splices are made, they must be soldered and insulated in a watertight
enclosure.
